![]() (And, brief aside, I can’t believe I forgot Laurence Fishburne was in this movie. I was seriously rooting for him the entire time. ![]() So that makes Weir the bad guy of this freak show, way before he looks into Hell and gouges his eyes out, and Miller the protagonist. So maybe he didn’t know for a fact that the gravity drive was gonna take everyone to Hell, but he knew it was possible and didn’t give a shit. He only cares about going as far as he can go. His obsession carries over into the events of the film as well when he tries to stop them from abandoning his precious creation. The backstory about his lady killing herself, apparently because he was too focused on work and not paying enough attention to her, reveals that he was probably kind of obsessed with building the Event Horizon. Did Weir know what the gravity drive was capable of and allow it to be used anyway because he thought the reward of faster-than-light travel would make it all worth it in the end? I think maybe he did. Fool was acting off right from the start of the movie, and I have to say that I am totally on Miller’s side when he says that Weir should not be there and that something is wrong. Spoilers and such ahead.įirst off, let’s talk about Weir. I’ll avoid summaries as I’m sure you’ve all seen it way more times than I have. Now I can’t decide if that was ultimately a good thing or a bad thing, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this science fiction classic with you all. That concept really intrigued me and got me thinking that maybe I should give this film a second chance. Then, a few weeks ago, someone in a thread on this sub (and my stoner memory won’t allow me to remember the thread or the person’s name, so if you read this, Lover of Event Horizon, please speak up!) described the way the gravity drive worked how, in folding time and space, for the split second the ship was teleporting, it occupied every possible plane of existence at once, and this was what allowed it to travel to actual Hell and bring bits of it back to our reality. I just thought it was cheesy and kind of stupid. I remember very little about the movie itself (an empty ship lost in space and Sam Neil running around being creepy and bleeding out of his face) but mostly I remember that I really didn't like it. I admit now that I was just a l’il nerd and had no real understanding of science fiction. I first saw Event Horizon when it came out in 1997, making me 13 at the time.
